Sunday the 8th of March, International Women’s Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a global movement celebrating the achievements of women while pushing for a more equal world. This year’s theme, Give to Gain, is all about the power of reciprocity. When we give our time, our voice, or our resources to support women, we all gain a stronger, more connected community.

From creative takeovers in the city centre to heritage trail-blazing, our district is packed with ways to get involved. Here is how you can Give To Gain in Wakefield and the Five Towns this International Women’s Day.

The Art House

As a female led organisation, The Art House is the beating heart of IWD in Wakefield. On Saturday 7 March, they are hosting an exciting programme of free workshops celebrating female friendship and connection. The day starts with a Knit Social before moving into activities like Zine Making, Self-Portraiture, and Radical Quilting. You can also visit the Wakefield Reclaim the Night Exhibition, displaying banners and footage from the 2025 march, celebrating collective action and solidarity. The celebrations finish with an Open Mic and a Vinyl Social afterparty with a ladies’ night on the decks.

Zine-Making and Riso Printing at West Yorkshire Print Workshop

Celebrate International Women’s Day by getting hands on with the art of zine making. Guided by educator Vicki Senior, you’ll use the workshop’s own Jeany-Jean Risograph printer to create a zine dedicated to a woman who inspires you, whether she’s a world-famous icon or a personal family hero. This session is all about giving visibility to the women we admire, and you’ll leave with six copies of your unique creation to share with friends and family.

Hatfeild Hall Blue Plaque Unveiling

Wakefield’s history gets a permanent update this International Women’s Day with the unveiling of a new Blue Plaque. The plaque honours the pioneering Wakefield Suffragists and the political feminists of Hatfeild Hall, ensuring their early activism and fight for equality are recognised by future generations. It’s a proud moment for the district, reminding us that the journey toward gender equality has deep, powerful roots right here in our district.
