There is cause for celebration this autumn as The Spread Eagle, one of the district’s most recognisable traditional ale houses, prepares to officially reopen its doors on Friday, 6th November.
Perched on Doncaster Road in Wragby, just a mile outside of Ackworth, and right next to Nostell Priory, the historic venue has sat quiet following an extended closure. In an era where village watering holes face an uphill battle and historic taverns all too frequently vanish from regional maps, the return of this long standing fixture marks a welcome win for the district’s pub landscape.
Operating under the Samuel Smith’s banner, the venue previously carved out a dedicated following thanks to its snug lounges, roaring open fires, great pints, and strict commitment to the lost art of pub conversation – eschewing televisions and flashing gaming machines in favour of genuine community atmosphere. Its roadside position alongside a hidden spacious beer garden has equally cemented its status over the years as a favoured post walk stop for ramblers exploring the neighbouring footpaths, Nostell Priory, and country lanes between Nostell, Wragby, and Ackworth.
The revival comes at a crucial moment for rural community hubs across Wakefield and the Five Towns. With locals having watched the dark windows for months, the grand reopening on Friday, 6th November will bring much needed life back to the Doncaster Road spot ahead of the busy winter season.
The Spread Eagle, Doncaster Road, Wragby, WF4 1QX. Reopening Friday, 6th November.
